Definition: See http://www.epa.gov/region5/defs/html/tsca.htm. The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), passed in 1976, requires tests of chemicals that may harm human health or the environment; reviews of new chemical substances; limits on the availability of some existing chemicals; and import certification standards to ensure that imported chemicals comply with domestic rules. TSCA bars the introduction of chemicals that may pose unreasonable risks to people or the environment, when the risks outweigh possible economic and social benefits. TSCA also regulates existing chemicals, particularly polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). For PCBs and a few other chemicals, TSCA prohibits or limits use and regulates handling, storage and disposal.

EPA EV-Chemical Substances-Chemical Roles
Taxonomy
Definition 1: Any compound that contributes to stratospheric ozone depletion. Includes chlorofluorocarbons, methyl bromide, and hydrochlorofluorocarbons. [EPA Report on the Environment Glossary at http://www.epa.gov/ncea/roe/glossary.htm]
Definition 2: Compound that contributes to stratospheric ozone depletion. Ozone-depleting substances (ODS) include chlorofluorocarbons, hydrochlorofluorocarbons, halons, methyl bromide, carbon tetrachloride, hydrobromofluorocarbons, chlorobromomethane, and methyl chloroform. ODS are generally very stable in the troposphere and only degrade under intense ultraviolet light in the stratosphere. When they break down, they release chlorine or bromine atoms, which then deplete ozone. [Ozone Layer Protection Glossary]
Definition 3: A family of man-made compounds that includes, but are not limited to, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), bromofluorocarbons (halons), methyl chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, methyl bromide, and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). These compounds have been shown to deplete stratospheric ozone, and therefore are typically referred to as ODSs. [Glossary of Climate Change Terms]
Definition 4: Any compound that contributes to stratospheric ozone depletion. [Report on the Environment (ROE) Glossary]
Per- And Polyfluorinated Substances
EPA EV-Chemical Substances
Taxonomy
Per-and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances
PFAS
EPA EV-Chemical Substances
Taxonomy
Definition 1: Group of man-made chemicals that includes PFOA, PFOS, GenX, and many other chemicals. PFAS have been manufactured and used in a variety of industries around the globe, including in the United States since the 1940s. PFOA and PFOS have been the most extensively produced and studied of these chemicals. Both chemicals are very persistent in the environment and in the human body – meaning they don’t break down and they can accumulate over time. There is evidence that exposure to PFAS can lead to adverse human health effects.
Definition 2: hCemicals that resist grease, oil, water, and heat. They were first used in the 1940’s and are now in hundreds of products including stain- and water-resistant fabrics and carpeting, cleaning products, paints, and fire-fighting foams. Certain PFAS are also authorized by the FDA for limited use in cookware, food packaging, and food processing equipment. Chemically, individual PFAS can be very different. However, all have a carbon-fluorine bond, which is very strong and therefore, they do not degrade easily. The widespread use of PFAS and their persistence in the environment means that PFAS from past and current uses have resulted in increasing levels of contamination of the air, water, and soil. Accumulation of certain PFAS has also been shown through blood tests to occur in humans and animals. While the science surrounding potential health effects of bioaccumulation is developing, exposure to some types of PFAS have been associated with serious health effects.
