Glossary and Key Word List
Definition: Biogenic hydrocarbons are naturally occurring compounds, including VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that are emitted from trees and vegetation. High VOC-emitting tree species such as eucalyptus can contribute to smog formation. Species-specific biogenic emission rates may be an important consideration in large-scale tree plantings, especially in areas with high ozone concentrations.

Biogenic Amines
EPA EV-Biological Substances-Human/Animal Systems & Processes
Taxonomy
Definition: A group of naturally occurring amines derived by enzymatic decarboxylation of the natural amino acids. Many have powerful physiological effects (e.g., histamine, serotonin, epinephrine, tyramine). Those derived from aromatic amino acids, and also their synthetic analogs (e.g., amphetamine), are of use in pharmacology. [NLM Medical Subject Headings (MeSH)]

Biogenic Deep Coral Reef
EPA EV-Natural Environments-Oceanic Environments
Taxonomy
Definition: Persistent structures, formed by deepwater corals, whose growth exceeds (bio) erosion. These reefs result in local topographic highs that alter hydrodynamic and sedimentary regimes. The actual reef structure remains, often with the growing reefs on their crest or side. The coral thickets and skeletal remains trap sediments, contributing to the accretion of the reef (Roberts et al. 2009). Biogenic Geoform
EPA EV-Natural Environments-Oceanic Environments

Biogenic Process
EPA EV-Natural Environments-Natural Phenomena
Taxonomy
Definition: Produced by biological processes. For example, organic acids produced by decomposition of plant litter are biogenic acids. [CADDIS]
Biogenic Sedimentary Rock
EPA EV-Natural Environments-Terrestrial Environments
Taxonomy
Definition: Biogenic sedimentary rocks form from the accumulation of organic remains consisting of both biogenic mineral and organic residues, such organic reefs, fecal concentrates, bone accumulations, swamp peat accumulations. The combined effects of time, temperature, and pressure, non-mineral organic residues may eventually be converted to coal, oil, gas, and tar. Larger Biogenic Geoform
EPA EV-Natural Environments-Oceanic Environments
Taxonomy
Definition: Physical features and landforms that were created by the action of living organisms (bioherms). These primarily consist of the different types of reefs. Examples of these generally hard, fixed structures include the incorporation of dissolved calcium carbonate into reef structure by corals, aggregations of mollusk shells into a fixed cohesive substrate, or the cementation of existing sediments into an aggregation of worm tubes. As with all geoforms the characteristic of concern in this component is the physical shape of these reef features, not the living biology that may have participated in their genesis. Any of the reef geoforms may or may not have living coral or other life present. [Federal Geographic Data Committee Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard, June 2012 FGDC-STD-018-2012]

Terrestrial Vegetation Biogenic Emission
EPA EV-Environmental Events-Discharges, Emissions and Releases
Taxonomy
Definition 1: (Emission of Biogenic Hydrocarbons which are) naturally occurring compounds, including VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that are emitted from trees and vegetation. High VOC-emitting tree species such as eucalyptus can contribute to smog formation. Species-specific biogenic emission rates may be an important consideration in large-scale tree plantings, especially in areas with high ozone concentrations. [Heat Island Effects Glossary]
Definition 2: Biogenic emissions are emissions from natural sources, such as plants and trees. These sources emit formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and methanol as well as large quantities of other non-HAP VOCs. Formaldehyde and acetaldehyde are key risk drivers in NATA. Biogenic emissions are typically computed using a model which utilizes spatial information on vegetation and land use and environmental conditions of temperature and solar radiation. In addition to being a primary source of HAP, other VOCs emitted by Biogenic sources react with anthropogenic VOCs and NOX to produce secondary formed HAPs. The NATA biogenics source group includes only the primary emissions. [National Air Toxics Assessment (NATA) Glossary]
